Methodological materials
The Latvian Culture Canon is a great resource for use in both formal and informal education. It is one of the mainstays and sources of inspiration for promoting civic education and civic participation, as well as for increasing the community’s sense of pride, especially that of young people, about Latvia.
In 2014, as part of the project “Integrated acquisition of the Latvian Language and Latvian Culture Canon by Representatives of National Minorities and Non-Citizens ‘Let’s be Acquainted: the Latvian Culture Canon'” (Latviešu valodas un Latvijas Kultūras kanona integrēta apguve mazākumtautību pārstāvjiem un nepilsoņiem “Būsim pazīstami: Latvijas Kultūras kanons”), Daugavpils University lecturers Maija Burima PhD and Inese Valtere – who have experience in intercultural, migration and diaspora issues and in adult education of the Latvian language and culture – developed and approved the original programme, worksheets and methodological recommendations for the integrated acquisition of the Latvian Culture Canon and the Latvian language. The “Methodological recommendations for integration projects promoting the Latvian Culture Canon” are intended for project implementers addressing the relevance of the Latvian Culture Canon with a particular focus on the integrated acquisition of the Latvian language and the Latvian Culture Canon by representatives of minorities, non-citizens, members of the Latvian diaspora, and third-country nationals.
The methodical recommendations provide basic information about the mission of the Latvian Culture Canon and present descriptions of twelve activities and forms of working.
The materials can be used for training different age groups, in formal and informal education, in order to create and expand knowledge about the treasures in the Culture Canon. The activities included in the methodological material should be implemented with the same approach as in the integrated acquisition of the Latvian language and content of the Culture Canon.
