Latvian School Bag
The Latvian School Bag (Latvijas skolas soma) programme is the State’s largest Centenary gift for the more than 200 000 children and young people in Latvia. From September 2018, the programme is providing every schoolchild in our country with the opportunity to learn about and experience Latvia’s cultural treasures and highlights, and to find out about the innovations and entrepreneurial successes of different eras in Latvia.
The link between the Latvian School Bag programme and the Culture Canon is very significant. The Canon can be considered a kind of treasure chest full of suggestions on where to begin learning about Latvia, at the same time emphasising the diversity of our treasures. The Culture Canon is a kind of foundation on which we, as a society, and as individuals can rely on, setting out on our country’s next hundred years, developing over time and creating this new era, not just being passive observers of it. Latvia’s Centenary programme invites us to celebrate joyfully and that also means doing our work and studying joyfully. So, finding out about Latvia’s cultural highlights in a new, contemporary way comes at the perfect time.
The Canon is a fantastic place where to discover, all in one place, the paintings of Vilhelms Purvītis, the Rīga Pantomime, the compositions of Lūcija Garūta and Emīls Dārziņš, the moped “Rīga-12”, rye bread, quotable quotes from the film “Limousine in the Colours of Midsummer Night” (Limuzīns Jāņu nakts krāsā) and many other things which matter to us and which make Latvia what it is. All of this must be passed on. It must be related and experienced in a contemporary, exciting and lively way.
